What is a health and well-being coach?
Health and well-being coaching is a strength based approach to creating wellness both mentally and physically. It incorporates aspects of general life coaching (helping you get to where you want to be) and has an emphasis on health and well-being.
The roles and aims of a health & wellbeing coach
The aim of a health coach is to empower and inspire an individual to adopt behaviours that are conducive to the overall health and well-being of the individual in both the short and long term. The role of a health coach is to inspire self-confidence, share knowledge and find ways to motivate an individual to achieve their goals.
This may include simple things such as implementing an exercise regime, improving dietary intake, providing support to start a mindfulness regime or ensuring that rest and relaxation time is built into the individual’s everyday lifestyle.
It may also include bigger goals - rediscovering one’s life purpose especially after a significant life event, ‘resetting’ one’s life-course or providing support while undergoing major life changes, be these externally driven (eg career change) or internally driven (eg menopause!).
It’s about encouraging a balanced lifestyle that incorporates the five ways of well-being; connection, taking notice, movement, finding passion (learning) and giving (participating).
Health and well-being coaching can be an effective way to build resilience and reduce emotional exhaustion and burnout, as well as improve the quality of life for an individual.
How is a health coach different from a life coach?
Unlike life coaching, health and well-being coaching uses a holistic approach that also encompasses how physical health may be impacting well-being and how stress, overwhelm and lifestyle choices may be affecting an individual’s physical health.
With knowledge of both physical and mental health, the approach is holistic ensuring that all aspects are covered as part of the physical and emotional healing, health and growth process.
Health & well-being coaching focuses on developing physical, physiological and mental resilience to the stresses and demands we place on ourselves.
